The RACI Matrix

What it is:
A tool for defining roles and responsibilities in a team, ensuring clarity and preventing confusion over task ownership.

How to use it:

  1. Create the Matrix:

    • Draw a 2x2 table (or use a digital tool like Google Sheets or Trello).

    • In the first column, list tasks or deliverables.

    • In the first row, list team members.

  2. Assign Roles:

    • For each task, assign the following roles:

      • R (Responsible): Who is doing the work?

      • A (Accountable): Who is accountable for the task’s completion?

      • C (Consulted): Who provides input or expertise?

      • I (Informed): Who needs to be kept informed?

  3. Review and Adjust:

    • Review the completed matrix with your team to ensure there is no overlap or ambiguity in roles.

    • Update the matrix regularly as the project evolves to ensure everyone is clear on their responsibilities.

  4. Follow Up:

    • Check in periodically to ensure that everyone is following their roles and that tasks are being completed on time.

When to use it:

  • At the start of a new project or team initiative.

  • When roles are unclear, or tasks are overlapping.

  • For larger teams with multiple collaborators.
