The Collaborative Decision-Making Process

What it is:
A method that guides teams through inclusive decision-making, allowing all voices to be heard and fostering better outcomes.

How to use it:

  1. Define the Decision:

    • Clearly state the decision that needs to be made. Ensure everyone understands the issue at hand.

  2. Gather Input:

    • Brainstorm ideas or solutions. Encourage everyone to contribute without judgment or criticism.

  3. Evaluate Options:

    • Discuss the pros and cons of each potential solution.

    • Use decision-making tools like SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to evaluate the options objectively.

  4. Reach Consensus:

    • Use tools like Dotmocracy or voting to prioritize options.

    • Ensure everyone’s voice is heard, and aim for consensus rather than majority rule.

  5. Make the Decision and Plan:

    • Once a decision is made, assign action items and responsibilities.

    • Schedule follow-up meetings to ensure the decision is implemented.

When to use it:

  • When the team faces a complex decision that requires input from everyone.

  • When you want to avoid groupthink and ensure diverse perspectives are considered.
